What is Moissanite

A discovery was made in 1893 by French chemist Henri Moissan, Moissan found fragments of a gemstone in a meteor crater, a discovery that came straight from the cosmos! These gemstones were later named“moissanite” after its founder, but we prefer to call them “space diamonds.”

Moissanite looks a lot like a diamond, and most professionals have a hard time telling a moissanite and a diamond apart with the naked eye. Not only do they look very similar but they are also very close in hardness, durability, and longevity.

Since moissanite is so rare in nature to find but is so incredibly beautiful, scientists started testing ways to recreate it in a lab, accomplishing this feat in 1988. Only recently has moissanite began to blow up in popularity, not only because it is stunning but also, being lab-created, there is no earth mining involved and are therefore eco-conscious. Since moissanite is created in a controlled environment you can make sure you are getting the ultimate sparkle you desire. Our expert gem cutters can cut moissanite to your preference, so whatever you are dreaming up we can make happen. Five carat oval?? One carat Radiant? Heart-shaped studs? Cushion-cut eternity band? We got you!

There are so many factors that go into selecting the perfect stone. Appearance (that bling baby!) was always at the top of a client’s list when shopping for a diamond, and we all want that sparkle to catch our eye every time we look down at our hand!

A “D” flawless diamond will cost around $13,000-$15,000 per carat, and before moissanite If you wanted something more affordable you would have to settle for a dull lackluster stone.

At Ara we do not think you should have to settle: you should have your dream ring and you should get excited every time you look at it ( for us, it's about 400 times a day). Because of lab-created moissanite, you can get that blow-you-away sparkle and heirloom quality without the diamond pricing.

A diamond is forever--and so is Moissanite.

Color and Carat

All of our moissanite stones are measured in millimeters rather than carat weight. All carat weights listed are based on averages and size equivalents. The carat weight equivalent is a point of reference and cannot be held in comparison to diamonds.

Moissanite comes in different colors also:

  • GIA's color-grading scale for diamonds is the industry standard.
  • The scale begins with the letter D, representing colorless, and continues with increasing presence of color to the letter Z, or light yellow or brown. Each letter grade has a clearly defined range of color appearance.
  • We use this color scale as a guide for Moissanite
  • Modern (comparable to DEF colourless in a Diamond)
  • Soft White (Comparable to GHI colour in a Diamond)
  • Canary (all shades of yellow)
  • Champagne, cognac, green, blue, grey and black
